This video is different than what we normally post, but we felt it was important to share. International Animal Rescue just released this footage from 2013 showing an orangutan in Indonesia trying to hold on to the last of his habitat as loggers destroy his home. Two members of IAR’s Orangutan Protection Unit try to dart and carry the animal to safety.
Here’s the heartbreaking footage with further explanation after the video.
This industry exists because of palm oil, which is found in just about everything. Our food, our fuel, everything. From Rainforest Rescue:
Palm oil is literally everywhere – in our foods, cosmetics, cleaning products and fuels. It’s a source of huge profits for multinational corporations, while at the same time destroying the livelihoods of smallholders. Displacement of indigenous peoples, deforestation and loss of biodiversity are all consequences of our palm oil consumption. How could it come to this? And what can we do in everyday life to protect people and nature?
