When a train struck this innocent dog, the consensus was that he would either live in agony until his days were over or be killed. But one rescue crew believed there was a third alternative, and they wanted to try anything to see if their hunch was correct.
An emergency call came in to India-based Animal Aid Unlimited regarding a dog who had been hit by a train and was severely injured. When they got there and saw the poor creature, they were confident they would have no option but to put him down. They could not stand the thought of him suffering any longer. They gave him the name Deepak.
When they took Deepak back to their medical facility, the veterinarian examined him. He was straightforward in his evaluation. With a clear head and a big heart, the doctor wanted to see if he could save Deepak but knew it would be difficult. Three of his limbs had been crushed and needed to be amputated. However, he felt that dogs had the ability to overcome adversity and that it was worth a try.
The surgeon performed emergency surgery. Deepak could begin to heal faster if this occurred sooner. The operation lasted 5 hours, including prep time and recovery. Now it was a question of getting Deepak over to the other side safely. He survived the surgical procedure, but would he survive infection and any other unforeseen dangers? It took 6 months of hard labor. The medical team and volunteers made sure that Deepak was not harmed during his rehabilitation process. When necessary, he received pain medication, as well as lots of love and attention. His change is amazing!
Like his other canine companions, Deepak receives hydrotherapy in the pool. He may strengthen his body without putting too much strain on areas that are still recovering in the pool. Being in the water, hunting for his favorite ball, and exercising those muscles are among his favorite activities.
Deepak was abandoned by his family because of his poor health. Because of his injuries, he will spend the rest of his life living in the Animal Aid sanctuary. He is surrounded by other dogs with similar disabilities. They, too, have lost limbs but still have a passion for life. Deepak is a testament to the power of having a big heart and lots of love on your side.
