When Jennifer and Steve Hetterscheidt adopted a 14-year-old Golden Retriever, they wanted to at least provide her with a loving home to live out her glory days. But little did they know they were in for quite the adventure with their new dog! August, or “Augie” as they call her, just recently celebrated her 20th birthday. 🙂
“They figured that most people wouldn’t want such an elderly golden, but they had no idea of the upcoming journey they would be on with Augie,” Golden Hearts Golden Retriever Rescue said on their website. “They’ve taken her on RV trips all around the country, she’s got several canine and feline siblings, and she gets to play fetch in the pool.”
Augie is believed to be the oldest living Golden Retriever with the average lifespan of the breed being 10-12 years.
And Mom says her dog is “surprisingly healthy” despite her old age. Augie is just a bit shaky on her legs when she first stands up but loves walking around the yard. Here’s to many more happy and healthy birthdays for sweet Augie! 🙂
