On the side of a road in Muscoy, California, an injured and pregnant German Shepherd lay waiting for help. But she wasn’t alone. By her side sat a red-furred dog guarding her as if he knew all of the implications at hand. Cars just continued to pass them by, but finally one stopped to reach out.
The Good Samaritan contacted Faith Easdale at Dream Fetchers: Project Rescue, and they set out to rescue the strays. Marley was in distress and breathing heavily, and they weren’t sure if she was going to make it. Her protector, Murphy, refused to leave her side.
Even in the vehicle, Murphy paid the utmost attention to Marley and comforted her by placing his head on her big belly. The two were rushed to the hospital where Marley’s X-ray revealed some broken bones and 11 puppies!
Her best friend and guardian angel stayed by her side the following days, but Murphy seemed to realize little by little that Marley was in good hands and started to back off a bit. He would go off and run and play as they tended to Marley. Faith could tell the two were not bonded and set out to find the good boy a home.
Despite the pain and anguish, Marley gave birth to 11 healthy puppies! Even with two of her legs in casts, she was able to provide for them as the most loving mother.
It would take years, but Marley completely recovered. She was adopted and went on to a loving home where she played as if she’d never been injured in the first place. Today, her babies are all grown up and healthy and it’s a happy ending for all involved!
