Woman Uses The Shirt Off Her Back To Help Injured Koala In Brush Fire

As a brush fire broke out in the wooded area, one local woman didn’t hesitate to step in and help an injured koala in the middle of the danger. As these fires continue to spread across Australia’s east coast, more and more animals are losing their food and homes.

Toni Doherty rushed to the crying koala and used the shirt off her back to wrap the animal and bring him to safety where she used bottled water to quench his thirst and help cool his burnt skin.

Now named Lewis, the koala was taken to Port Macquarie Koala Hospital to be treated for his injuries. According to 9News, the koala’s health “hangs in the balance.”

The heroic grandmother recently reunited with Lewis during his recovery and gave him some company as he munched on eucalyptus. What an amazing, selfless thing this woman did, and we’re hoping for a full recovery for Lewis!
